Richard Barrett has been Managing Director of Barrett Steel Buildings Ltd and Director of Barrett Steel Ltd (one of the UK’s largest steel stockholders) for 20 years, with experience in the steel and construction industry extending over 25 years. He is also the President of BCSA (British Constructional Steelwork Association).

Sustainability is top of Richard’s agenda and this is reflected within Barrett Steel Buildings clear objectives; including recently being the first steelwork organisation to have completed a calculation of their carbon footprint.

Guy is the originator and founder of dcarbon8, a leading carbon and sustainability consultancy. He has had over 20 years of experience as a consulting engineer in the construction industry starting his career at Ove Arup in London. In 1993 he became a founding partner of the world-renowned firm of consulting engineers, Battle McCarthy, where he continued to build his reputation as an expert in sustainable practices and design. Since then his practice has been active in the field of carbon management, and in 2001 Guy coordinated the only successful consultant and group bid for the UK Emissions Trading Scheme. This included successful bids for a number of clients including Lend Lease, Land Securities and the University Carbon Club.

Guy has previously been a visiting professor at the Architectural Association, Illinois Institute of Technology and the Bartlett, London. He lectures widely across the world on sustainability and the carbon markets and has recently been a Master speaker at the USGBC, Key Note speaker at Tropical Green and at Eco Build UK.

Trevor Beattie - Conference Speaker   Trevor Beattie

Trevor Beattie is English Partnerships' Director of Corporate Strategy, responsible for Policy, Economics, the Brownfield Strategy, the National Consultancy Unit and the Advisory Team on Large Applications (ATLAS). He co-ordinated the delivery of the Design for Manufacture Competition on behalf of Government and is currently doing the same for the Carbon Challenge.

Trevor joined English Partnerships at its inception in 1993, having worked on the legislation to develop an Urban Regeneration Agency as a member of the Inner Cities Policy Unit in what was then the Department of the Environment (DoE). He was responsible for DoE’s sponsorship of the London Docklands Development Corporation in the mid-1980s and was Private Secretary to four successive Ministers of Local Government and Inner Cities. He was a member of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Coalfields Task Force.

Trevor is part of the small Transition Team which is preparing for the creation of Communities England in April 2009.

Transferred to Barnsley Social Services Dept in the role of Senior Registration and Inspection Officer and after a brief spell as a business manager, Lorraine moved to what is now the Dept of Health E&FD and is currently the Sustainable Development Manager responsible for Greening the NHS in England. Lorraine is a qualified environmental manager and has a degree in health and social welfare.

Murray joined Bovis Lend Lease in 1987 and prior to his current role, Murray was the Chief Executive Officer of Bovis Lend Lease, Asia Pacific. Previously, he was based in London where he was the Head of Environment, Health & Safety for the entire Lend Lease Group; responsible for workplace safety and the Incident & Injury Free program. Before this Murray was Chief Operating Officer of the Microelectronics and Pharmaceutical Group operating in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Murray is now responsible for the project management and construction business in the UK.

Murray is a Board member of the Australian Constructors Association, and holds a Bachelor of Building (1st Class Honours) from the University of Melbourne.

Prior to joining Wates, Paul spent 24 years with ICI Plc holding senior positions in the UK, Brazil and the USA, which culminated with five years as Chief Executive of one of ICI’s four international businesses. He was also a main board member of ICI PLC, chairman of ICI Pension Trustees Ltd., and a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Paul was appointed a non-Executive Director of Filtrona Plc in May 2005 and is Senior Independent Director and Chairman of the Remuneration Committee. He is also a member of the Trinity College Dublin Business School Advisory Board.

Deborah Evans is Head of Corporate Reporting and Assurance at LRQA, and is responsible for managing our verification services. She leads the team whose task it is to understand the issues which surround assuring the carbon footprint in supply chains. Before joining Lloyd’s Register, Deborah coded computer algorithms for transmission to satellites. These algorithms collected data on solar cycles, sun spots and flares.

Deborah has over fifteen years experience in assessing environmental management systems and verifying data. She has worked on regulatory emission trading schemes, and on annual company CSR and sustainability reports. She has worked with global companies such as BP, Johnson & Johnson, ExxonMobil, BT, TNT, Honeywell, Matsushitu and Lucent Technologies, helping them to improve their sustainability performance.

Deborah’s experience of verification has seen her getting involved in the technical committees developing:
  • AccountAbility’s Assurance Standard (A1000 AS)
  • GRI’s Global Reporting Initiative for the environmental, health, safety and labour indicators
  • British Standards’ guidance document for managing sustainable development
  • ISO’s standards on environment and social responsibility.

Dave joined Land Securities in 1986, initially working in energy management before taking on the new environmental brief in 1997. He was instrumental in seeing the company become the first in its sector to report openly on carbon emissions and produce a stand-alone environmental report, in 2001. His role looks at environmental issues across the whole Group, including policy; targets, EMS implementation and new bids for LS Trillium. Dave chairs the company’s Climate Change and Energy Innovations workgroups, exploring ways to help their clients significantly reduce the carbon footprints of the buildings they occupy and to make their locations more resilient to climate impacts. In May 2007, Dave was named ES Environment Manager Of The Year by IEMA and is a member of the UK Green Building Council Technical Committee, BCO Environmental Sustainability Panel, the Green Property Alliance and the Carbon Vision steering group. He is also a past-Chairman of the Central London Energy Management Group.

Rosi has worked as a project architect for Simons Design Ltd in Lincoln since qualifying in 1999, in retail, office and mixed use development projects. Previously she worked for Ken Yeang in Kuala Lumpur and for KBA in London. Simons Design work closely with our sister organisations Simons Construction and Simons Developments with our research projects. Rosi's research into sustainability in UK retail architecture resulted in a PhD from Newcastle awarded in 2006. Simons won the Building Contractor of the Year for 2007, and have a number of awards for waste management and sustainability which they hope to build on with their commercial customer base. Research links are maintained with Newcastle University, and currently they are developing a Construction Carbon Footprinting Methodology in partnership with Lincoln University.

As chief operating officer of Willmott Dixon, John Frankiewicz manages a business with a 400m turnover and projects across England and Wales. Willmott Dixon is a privately-owned construction company established in 1852 that designs and builds in most sectors, including education, leisure, health, custodial and retail.

To help stimulate the design and build of space that is more sustainable, environmentally aware and that incorporates fresh design ideas, John Frankiewicz helped set up Re-Thinking and was instrumental in making the school of the future at BRE a reality.

Nicholas currently works on the Thames Gateway as Climate Change and Energy Manager for the Department of Communities and Local Government. This work is founded upon findings of low carbon feasibility work and will take advantage of the particular local and regional setting of the Thames Gateway in seeking to deliver exemplar development. He previous worked at a European level on improving the supply of finance for the development of sustainable cities and regions.

Martin joined Forum in 2005 after seven years at CIRIA where he had responsibility for the delivery of a portfolio of research and implementation projects related to sustainable construction. During his time at CIRIA, Martin was manager of the Construction Industry Environmental Forum (CIEF), a network engaging practitioners in the development and promotion of good practice related to sustainable construction.

Prior to CIRIA, Martin spent four formative years within the environmental consultancy sector, working on a wide range of projects, including multinational environmental audits, contaminated site investigations and emissions monitoring. Martin is a Masters graduate from Lancaster University

David Johnson has worked in the construction industry for most of his working life since graduation and in the modular industry for the past 18 years.

He has contributed to a number of Government and industry initiatives on construction legislation and Building Regulations.

Andrew is the Senior Environmental Manager and Sustainability Executive for Bovis Lend Lease UK. He is a Chartered Environmentalist and Registered Environmental Auditor with the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment. Andrew has worked for Bovis Lend Lease for the past 8 years, and has over 12 years experience of working within environmental consultancy, industry and academia.

Andrew heads up the Bovis Lend Lease Environmental Management Unit, which provides strategic project and technical support on a wide range of environmental and sustainability issues to the company.

His expertise and skills comprise many different scientific and technical aspects of environmental work including: environmental baseline studies, impact assessments, audits, corporate policy and reporting, EMS & ISO 14001, waste management and recycling.

Andrew was responsible for developing the Environmental Management System of Bovis Lend Lease which gained certification to ISO14001 in 2002. Andrew developed the current Bovis Lend Lease timber procurement policy, processes and reporting procedures and was responsible for the company joining the World Wide Fund for Nature UK Forest and Trade Network (formerly the 95+ group) in 2000.

Neil leads Arup’s Sustainable Business Management team and is an Associate Director at Arup.

He is widely regarded as an expert in sustainability management and has 20 years experience assisting the public and private sectors in making more informed decisions linked to development and implementation of policy and strategy and informing investment decisions.

Neil has advised the European Commission as well as government bodies worldwide on environmental and sustainability management matters. He was a consultant to London 2012 providing expert advice on key areas of sustainability linked to management systems, sustainable procurement and supply chain management.

He has a particular interest in practical implementation of sustainability management. Current areas of application include hotel and event management, the development and use of a sustainability toolkit to inform decision making, and the application of sustainability appraisal techniques to guide the development of new build and regeneration projects.

Neil’s current work includes undertaking an evaluation of carbon reduction strategies for the Thames Gateway (DCLG/ English Partnerships/ DEFRA/ Environment Agency, UK); sustainability masterplanning (Gallaghers/English Partnerships; Opportunity Peterborough); and providing support to the Greater London Authority regarding Climate Change Policy work.

Beverley Lister began her environmental career in Waste Regulation at Surrey County Council. In 1996 she moved to the Environment Agency undertaking various roles relating to pollution prevention at industrial sites. Beverley joined BAA in 1998 as Environmental Projects and Strategy Manager for Heathrow airport. In 2001 she joined the Heathrow Terminal 5 Project as Head of Environment. During the design stage she was instrumental in the early delivery of the T5 Environmental Brief alongside developing the management systems for site operations. With the start of bulk earthworks in 2002 her focus switched to site environmental leadership, working with Project teams, the local community, Regulators and suppliers, pushing the boundaries to deliver exemplary environmental performance. In 2007 Beverley joined BAA’s Capital Projects team as Sustainability Leader, taking on the wider portfolio of BAA’s construction activities.

Tony Mars is Head of Construction at Sainsbury’s plc, one of the UK’s leading food retailers.

After working for a leading construction management company for 10 years, Tony joined Sainsbury’s in 2002 and has held a number of Project Management roles delivering schemes for the business from Major Refurbishments through to large Mixed Use and Distribution projects. He was appointed Head of Construction in December 2006.

Tony and his team provide support and resources to the in-house delivery function with resource procurement, on-site innovation and sustainability together with regulatory compliance being their main deliverables.

Tony has been a member of the RICS since the early 1990's and is involved in Constructing Excellence and the Considerate Constructors scheme.

George is Head of Sustainability with Willmott Dixon Construction’s Re-Thinking Business Unit, an initiative aiming to deliver sustainable buildings for all sectors.

George is also a Non-Executive Director of The Academy for Sustainable Communities, an Associate of the UK’s leading sustainable development charity Forum for the Future, Chair of the Sustainable Development Foundation and a Board member of the recently established UK Green Building Council.

Prior to this current appointment, he was Director of Sustainability at BRE where he worked closely with Government on the development of the Code for Sustainable Homes. At Forum for the Future working with Jonathon Porritt, George became an advocate for pioneering sustainability work with the corporate sector.

George joined Forum for the Future as Director of Business Affairs in 1999 from Tarmac where he was Director of Environment for Tarmac Construction Services (now Carillion) and Managing Director of Stanger Science and Environment.

Alan is on secondment to the project from KPMG LLP where he is an Audit Director. He is a chief assessor for World Class business models, and is heading a research programme into world class supply chains in construction.

He joined Thomas vale Construction in September 2003 as Business Improvement Director. Responsibilities include the implementation of lean and continuous improvement within Thomas Vale, their supply chain and with Clients. He is also responsible for overseeing the use of MMC / OSM across the business.

Peter Quinn - Conference Speaker   Peter Quinn

MANAGING DIRECTOR

Peter Quinn is Managing Director of ScotAsh, the UK leader in sustainable construction PFA-based products. The company is a joint venture between ScottishPower-Iberdrola and Lafarge Cement.

A geologist, with an Honours degree from Southampton University, an MSc in Environmental Technology and an MBA, Peter spent his early career working overseas in the copper industry.

He returned to the UK in 1985 to join Pioneer UK, where he worked in the Aggregates and Concrete businesses. In 1996 he became Quarries Director, Scotland at Bardon Aggregates. He was appointed Regional Director, Scotland in 1997.

Prior to joining ScotAsh, Peter held senior positions with Lafarge Aggregates, latterly as Production Manager, Aggregates and Asphalt for the company’s Central Region.

Peter is a Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying, a Member of the Institute of Asphalt Technology and Chairman of the UK Quality Ash Association. He is a former Chairman of Building Material Producers Scotland.

ScotAsh has won many awards for its sustainable construction products, including a Vision in Business for the Environment of Scotland (VIBES) Award 2004, a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2005 and environmental Big Ticks from Business in the Community in 2006 and 2007.

Morag Robertson - Conference Speaker   Morag Robertson

Morag Robertson has worked for Sainsbury’s for 13 years. She graduated with a degree in Environmental Management and since joining the Environment Team she has held a number of project roles, mainly within Supply Chain and most recently heading up Environmental Management within Sainsbury's Supply Chain. Morag is currently responsible for ensuring the successful roll-out of ISO14001 across Supply Chain and is working with each of the company's 21 depots in order to drive environmental best practice and support business performance.

Morag has recently been involved in the development of the Company's newest depot at Northampton, whose Environmental credentials set a new standard in the industry.

After a short spell with British Steel, Jeff entered the Construction rental industry working in sales, then operational and Sales management, with Speedy PLC, M&H plant hire, and latterly Hewden Stuart.

After a spell as a regional operational director with Hewden, Jeff studied Marketing at the Warwick business school before taking the Head of Marketing role a position he has occupied for the past four years.

Gary is co-founder of Wilson James Ltd, which provides a range of support services to industry and commerce, some of which include construction logistics, material consolidation, logistics consultancy, security and FM services to many blue chip clients across the UK. Wilson James Ltd employs over 2,000 people nationwide.

After leaving the armed forces, Gary worked freelance in a variety of industries, including Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical, Event Management and Construction.

In the early 1990s, he joined the United Nations High Commission for Refugees as part of the team that set up humanitarian aid and logistics in war-torn former Yugoslavia.

Gary is Chairman of the Thames Gateway South Essex Partnership, a Board member of Renaissance Southend, a member of the Sport England Regional Sports Board and a trustee of the London Docklands Sailing Centre.

Dr Arthur Thornton manages the Regulatory Compliance and Research team in the Water Resources & Environment Business.

Arthur is a Principal Consultant in Atkins Water with over 14 years experience acquired in the regulation and management of wastewater. He has extensive experience managing complex projects for a variety of clients including environmental regulators, industry, property developers, with a strong emphasis on mediation between the parties.

Based on his research and development background he has provided regulatory tools and guidance for both the Environment Agency and the UK Water Industry. He has recently led a team researching the carbon costs of regulation and balancing the environmental benefits and carbon costs.

Arthur acts as an expert witness for arbitration and litigation purposes and has provided advice in both court and regulatory appeal cases.

Dr Miles Watkins - Conference Speaker   Dr. Miles Watkins

Miles graduated from University of Hertfordshire (UK) in 1996 with a degree in Environmental Studies and has since completed a PhD in stakeholder management at the University of Bath (UK). At Aggregate Industries, Miles has held leading positions in sustainability management and is currently Director of Group Environmental and Corporate Social Responsibility. He takes an active role in the industry and chairs various committees within the Quarry Products Association, the British Pre-Cast Concrete Federation and the Institute of Quarrying. Miles has been instrumental in the establishment of the sustainable product development agenda within Aggregate Industries which forms a vital part of the company's overall sustainability strategy.

Mike Watson - Conference Speaker   Mike Watson

WRAP (WASTE & RESOURCES ACTION PROGRAMME)
     
Dr. Mike Watson is Head of Construction at WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) with overall responsibility for the Construction Programme. WRAP’s work in construction is aimed at increasing the efficiency of materials use across the whole of the construction process, by encouraging the sector to reduce waste, recycle more and use recycled materials. Mike manages three programmes to achieve this: waste minimisation and management, materials recycling, and procurement.

Prior to taking up his current position, Mike managed WRAP’s Aggregates, Plasterboard and Tyres programmes, where he was responsible for developing markets for the greater use of these recycled materials.

Mike is a geologist by training, having gained his D.Phil at Oxford University, and prior to joining WRAP in 2003, he had 25 years experience in the international oil industry in a variety of technical, planning and business development roles.

Rachel Woolliscroft - Conference Speaker   Rachel Woolliscroft, MIOSH, IEMA

Rachel has worked in the construction industry for over 10 years starting life as a researcher at the Building Research Establishment.

She joined Wates Group in 1998 as a Regional Health and Safety Manager before being appointed as Group Environmental Manager in 2001. In 2004, Rachel was also given responsibility for managing the Corporate Social Responsibility strategy for the business and to reflect this was appointed as Group Sustainability Manager in 2007. Rachels role includes developing group sustainability policy and strategy, working with the businesses and their key customers to identify opportunities for enhancing our proposition around sustainability, providing leadership in relation to the impact of the companys activities on society and advising the Wates CR Strategy Group on sustainability issues which is chaired by James Wates.

Rachel reports to Paul Drechsler, Chairman and Chief Executive and plays a key role in advising the Group Broad, Executive Team and Businesses on environmental and corporate responsibility matters.

Dave Zammit MSc - Conference Speaker   Dave Zammit MSc

Dave is a Senior Consultant on carbon management and sustainable energy at ESD with over 6 years experience of implementing sustainable improvements in large and small organisations. He is currently leading carbon management programmes for Wilson Bowden Ltd and five Local Authorities, and preparing energy and sustainability strategies for a large housing development in London aiming for Code Level 3 certification. In his previous role as the Sustainable Development Manager for the Science Museum Dave established and chaired a national forum for museums and galleries to benchmark performance on carbon emissions. This forum aimed to help the sector identify good practice and lobby the government for appropriate labelling categories under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. Dave also helped develop the sustainable energy strategy for the new Science Museum store and exhibition building in Swindon.
